Give me liberty through my death: What does it mean to be a christian?
Dead/Resurrection and Relationship.
Christianity is all about dying and then having a spirit reanimate our dead selves. Jesus says to pick up our cross daily and to die to ourselves. Why? So that we can become closer to our full potential, which really is becoming more like Jesus through the power of the Holy Spirit. It is this queer mix between having none of “me” left while still being “me.” I could be wrong, but I imagine it kind of like the “chosen one” in your select movie finally seeing the world the way it truly is and thus being able to tap into their true self and some power. As new age as that sounds, when Christians die to themselves, emptying themselves of all the not God stuff, they are more like who God intended them to be and they live with power that God promises.
Paul says that there is no Christianity without the resurrection because the one Christians claim to serve and follow would be dead and had no power- He wouldn’t be God. Jesus would have died on the cross for no reason. In Christian tradition, people are baptized after they believe to symbolize that they are dying to their old lives and resurrecting in Jesus.
The catch is what we have to die to being dead. It is almost like sin killed us and we have been living as reanimated corpses, as zombies slowly rotting away, and then through Jesus we are resurrected where our decaying bodies start to be renewed. We are made alive by the Spirit of Jesus. I imagine that as we are emptied of all the flesh that we have consumed, the Spirit of God fills us more regenerating our deteriorating bodies. As much as this is meant to indicate our spiritual state, it also indicates an event that all Christians anticipate in the future when their physical bodies are made new ( presumably similar Jesus’ body after His resurrection). In essence we are dying to death and finding life.
There is this complicated concept in Christianity called the Godhead or the Trinity. If I don't explain it right then it sounds like Christians worship 3 gods or one god who has different modes- both are wrong. In the Being we call God there is the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit who are of the same substance and equal with each other. There are three distinct persons that are of one being. It is the tri- unity. So forever God in three persons has been with Himself in relationship in this Holy unity. (I’m pretty sure I butchered the concept so find someone smarter than me to explain it haha). All three are equally God and all work together.
Humans are social creatures. For better or worse we can be so social that we get into a bunch of trouble (think crowd mentality). Since people make up the Church, Christianity is no different, for better or for worse Christians do things together. The early Church met everyday because friendships were so important. Empty Church strives to meet the same faith cultivating friendships. As we die together we become renewed; As we empty ourselves of all the things that make us hollow we become whole in Jesus.
What it means to be a Christian is to finally truly live.
