Teaching Your Kids About Creation
Throughout our series "Bones of our Beliefs" we're discussing what we believe and why we believe it. As a parent, I believe it's important to also explain what you believe and why to your children. Since our daughter is six years old and starting to ask questions, I thought it was the perfect opportunity to explain to her the bones of our belief and share that journey with you. Feel free to use these blogs to start conversations with your kids and to add comments on how you have explained the bones of your belief with your family.
God created the heavens and the earth.
We believe that in 6 days, God created everything! Genesis chapter 1 tells the story of how our world was created. Each day something new was created and on the 7th day God rested.
Day 1 - God Made Light
And God said, "Let there be light," and there was light. And God saw that the light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. (Genesis 1:3-5)
God made light. He made it so that during the day we have light and at night we have darkness.
Day 2 - God Made The Sky
And God said, "Let there be an expanse in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters." And God made the expanse and separated the waters that were under the expanse from the waters that were above the expanse. And it was so. And God called the expanse Heaven. (Genesis 1:6-8)
On the second day, God made the sky. He separated the water in the sky (or the atmosphere) from the water on the earth
Day 3 - God Made The Plants
And God said, "Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear." And it was so. God called the dry land Earth, and the waters that were gathered together he called Seas. And God saw that it was good. And God said, "Let the earth sprout vegetation, plants yielding seed, and fruit trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind, on the earth." And it was so. (Genesis 1:9-13)
On the third day, God made the waters separate to allow for dry land. Then He created all kinds of plants, trees, fruits, and vegetables to grow.
Listen in as the EC crew talks about who God is and how he creates and sustains us.
Day 4 - God Made The Heavens
And God said, "Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night. And let them be for signs and for seasons, and for days and years, and let them be lights in the expanse of the heavens to give light upon the earth." And it was so. And God made the two great lights—the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night—and the stars. (Genesis1:14-16)
On the fourth day, God made the sun, moon, and stars! The light God created for day would be produced by the sun and at night we would have a dimmer light by the moon and stars.
Day 5 - God Made The Birds And Fish
And God said, "Let the waters swarm with swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the heavens." So God created the great sea creatures and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarm, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. (Genesis 1:20-21)
On the fifth day, God made creatures that belong in the sea and in the sky. He made tiny fish and great big whales. He made little blue birds and giant eagles.
Day 6 - God Made Animals And People
And God said, "Let the earth bring forth living creatures according to their kinds—livestock and creeping things and beasts of the earth according to their kinds." And it was so. And God made the beasts of the earth according to their kinds and the livestock according to their kinds, and everything that creeps on the ground according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth." So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him;male and female he created them. (Genesis 1:24-27)
On the sixth day God created all kinds of animals. Small creatures like mice and rabbits as well as large creatures like elephants and giraffes. Every animal on earth was created by God.
God also created people after His own image. He made one man and one woman. God put the man and woman, named Adam and Eve, in charge of every living thing on the earth.
Day 7 - God Rested
Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. And on the seventh day God finished his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done. So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all his work that he had done in creation. (Genesis2:1-3)
On the seventh day, God rested and enjoyed His creation. He made the seventh day of the week holy because it was a day He took to rest.
