The First 5 Questions you should ask your spiritual mentor
What should be the first thing I ask my mentor?
There are an infinite number of questions that you can ask your mentor. But where do you start? Walter Wright Jr. provides a good list of questions to help you narrow down your mentoring candidates; but what do you say once you’ve selected your mentor? Here are some ideas
- where have you come from here are you going? (spiritual journey)
- What are your honest opinions about me?
- What one thing should we focus on to start?
- How long can we commit to meeting together? How often?
- Is there anything we cannot talk about?
These questions are meant to break the ice and focus the nature of your relationship. It is critical to know what your mentor’s initial thoughts are and if he has some plans to get you to your goal. Likewise, it is important to know what he thinks about you. If you think Jesus is calling you to something and your mentor does not see it, that is valuable information. Maybe you are not hearing Jesus correctly or you have selected the wrong mentor.
You will be asking your mentor a lot of questions and you will get some beneficial answers. Insight for living as Christ is passed on when good spiritual questions receive sound answers. As important as asking the right questions is, it is not nearly as important as giving your mentor the permission to ask you the right questions.
In our next post we look at five questions that can jumpstart your mentoring relationship. It focuses on the questions that your mentor should be allowed to ask you and expect honest answers in return.
